12 Warning Signs That Your Child May Need Our Help:

  1. Your child’s teacher or school counselor recommended you get help for your child.
  2. Your child's grades are starting to fall, regardless of how hard he or she seems to be working.
  3. Your child’s homework is frequently incomplete or inaccurate, regardless of how long he or she works on it.
  4. Your child seems to be falling behind and unable to catch up with the rest of the class.
  5. Your child shows signs of frustration and an increasing lack of self-confidence and motivation.
  6. Your child has lost or is losing interest in school and learning (i.e. “it’s boring”).
  7. Your child experiences extreme anxiety before tests and exams.
  8. Your child is reluctant to go to school, fearing failure and criticism from others (including you).
  9. Your child's teacher says that he or she is acting out in class or is having behavior problems.
  10. Your child uses any of the following words or phrases, "I'm too stupid. I'll never understand this stuff. I’m just not that smart. It’s just too hard."
  11. Your child and his/her teacher just don’t seem to get along.

10 Things You Need to Know!

Choosing an after-school program for your child is a very important decision, and it’s one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. All after-school programs are NOT created equal.

Therefore, whether you decide to entrust your child to us at the Character Center or choose to enroll your child elsewhere, become a well-informed, highly-educated parent or guardian concerning after-school programs. Before you enroll your child, find out the following about each potential program/center:

Does the program/center offer state-required benchmarks geared towards Sunshine State standards in which to measure your child’s academic progress?

Does the program/center have curriculum designed specifically to help your child prepare for and pass the FCAT?

Is the center willing (or able) to send a representative to sit down and meet one-on-one with your child’s teacher(s) to discuss and assess his or her academic strengths and weaknesses?

Are the center’s personnel qualified and willing to read your child’s Education Assessment Form (EAF) and make proper recommendations to assist your child?

Does the program/center staff have the proper social skills to work with and communicate with “your” child? Can they “relate” and connect with your child on an emotional as well as academic level?

Does the program/center offer a diverse and variety of teaching techniques, methodologies, and styles in order to best teach and reach your child? Can they teach the way your child learns best?

Is the center willing (or able) to periodically schedule classroom visitations to your child’s school in order to shadow your child for a day to gain first-hand knowledge about your child’s academic, behavioral, and social issues.

Is the center willing (or able) to become an advocate and supporter of your child “outside” of the classroom – i.e., attending his or her school functions, sporting events, and club activities?

Does the program/center permit and encourage parent and child on-site visits?

Does the program offer a tuition money-back guarantee if it cannot produce a change you (the parent) can see and your child can feel?
